Tropical nights: when night ventilation cannot cool your home
A tropical night stays above 20 °C, but the indoor-outdoor difference decides whether ventilation helps. Learn what to do when nights stay hot.
A tropical night is commonly defined in Europe as a night when the minimum outdoor temperature does not fall below 20 °C. It is a warning that the usual overnight recovery may be weak—not an automatic instruction to keep every window closed.
The decision still depends on the difference between indoor and outdoor temperature. If your home is 28 °C and the shaded outdoor air reaches 22 °C, ventilation can help. If both stay around 25 °C, moving outdoor air through the room removes little stored heat.
Why a hot night changes the plan
During an ordinary summer night, outdoor air falls below indoor temperature and stays there for hours. That gives the building time to release heat through open windows.
During a tropical night:
- The useful temperature difference may be small
- Streets, roofs, and courtyards can continue releasing stored heat after dark
- The crossover may happen late and end soon after sunrise
- Humidity can make the air feel uncomfortable even when its temperature is slightly lower
This is especially noticeable in a city heat island. A rural forecast can look cool while the street outside your window is still radiating the afternoon.
Check the difference, not the label
The 20 °C definition describes the weather event. It does not describe your home.
Follow the indoor-versus-outdoor rule:
- If shaded outdoor air is cooler than indoors, open where safe and use the difference
- If it is only a little cooler, try a shorter flush and check whether indoor temperature responds
- If it is as warm as or warmer than indoors, close the window and use the fan on people instead

Make a short cooling window count
When useful outdoor air arrives late, prepare before it does:
- Keep sun-facing windows and shutters closed through the day
- Open interior doors so air can reach the warmest rooms
- Use the shady or greener side as the intake when possible
- Put a fan near the exhaust path, facing outward, when you have cross-ventilation
- Close again before the morning temperature and sun overtake the indoor reading

When ventilation barely helps
Shift the goal from cooling the whole building to keeping people safe and as comfortable as possible:
- Keep daytime solar gain as low as possible
- Run a fan where someone is present rather than in an empty room
- Mist skin or use a damp cloth so moving air can support evaporation
- Move sleeping space to the coolest safe room if that is practical
- Follow local heat-health alerts and use a public cool space when your home remains dangerously hot
Cooling your body matters most when the building cannot recover overnight.
One difficult night affects the next day
If the home starts the morning warm, it has less capacity to absorb the next day’s heat. Close and shade early, avoid unnecessary indoor heat sources, and be ready to use the next real outdoor-temperature drop.
